Things to do in Majorca? Why go to the beach of course! Since Majorca is an island sprinkled with glorious sandy beaches it would be too easy to write entirely about spending time lounging on the beach sipping cocktails.

Instead, let’s take a look at the other things to do in Majorca away from the beach. There are some amazing sights and plenty of ways to spend some time away from all that sand. Mallorca has so much to offer. 

Things to do in Majorca 1 – Explore Palma de Mallorca

The capital of the island is called Palma de Mallorca (Mallorca is the Spanish spelling of the name of the island) and a lot of tourists never seem to make the effort to leave their resorts to see it. This is a real shame, because it offers some of the most exciting and authentic things to do in Majorca.

The massive La Seu Cathedral towers over the capital and the pretty harbour is often filled with giant cruise liners and insanely expensive yachts. The waterside walkway offers a nice place from which to soak it all up and get a tan.

One of the first things you will notice in Palma is that a lot of the residents don’t speak Spanish. There is a dialect of Catalan here called Mallorqui that is used by many, although everyone appears to be fluent in Spanish as well. This bilingual approach explains why you may see street signs in both languages.

Things to do in Majorca 2 – Eat lots of delicious food!

Spain is, of course, renowned for its excellent cuisine.

One of the top things to do in Majorca is to explore the local food, much of which is unique to this island. For example, Sopa Mallorquina is a heavy soup typically filled with loads of tasty cabbage.

Frito Mallorquin is a meat fry type of dish that I wasn’t a great fan of, but I love the cabbage soup.

For those travellers with a sweet tooth, you simply can’t not try the Ensaimadas. These are perhaps the most famous product from the island and they are absolutely delicious. Just check out the Spanish tourists, who all seem to go home with several boxes of these famous pastries.

Ensaimadas are round, spiral pastries that are often filled with sweet stuff like cream. You may have to order in advance, so don’t leave it until the last minute to try them. Just look for stores with octagonal boxes hanging outside of the door. Otherwise, you can get hold of slightly inferior versions in many supermarkets.

Things to do in Majorca 3 – Check out the Resorts!

One of the things I most loved about Majorca was being able to go to different resorts and enjoy very different experiences without even going on the beach.

For example, Magaluf is aimed at British holidaymakers, so you can watch dreadful TV shows like Eastenders while eating an all day breakfast and listening to Brits talking all around you.

S’Arenal is a German dominated resort. When I went here I ate a whopping great sausage and listened to a live German band knock out some cracking tunes. It is pretty interesting to explore a different culture like this away from its natural setting. Also called El Arenal

Things to do in Majorca 4 – Alcudia

It is easy to think that the best things to do in Majorca all involve lounging on the beach or at least being close to the rugged coastline. However, the interior of the island has some beautiful spots too. Bellver Castle, the train journey to Soller, the Serra de Tramuntana and Binsissalem are among the top spots.

I spent a lot of my time in Alcudia, which is close to a coastal resort of the same name on the north side of Majorca. So what are the things to do in Alcudia that don’t involve getting sand between your toes? Well, I loved the medieval, walled part of town.

It has a Roman feel to it and is very different from the busy, modern resort of Puerto Alcudia a couple of miles away.

There is an authentic quality to this place and it is also a spot where traditional fairs are often held. If you are looking for things to do in Majorca then this is one of the top places to check out.

Things to do in Majorca 5 – Head inland

It is easy to think that the best things to do in Majorca all involve lounging on the beach or at least being close to the rugged coastline. However, the interior of the island has some beautiful spots too. Bellver Castle, the train journey to Soller, Binsissalem and the Serra de Tramuntana are among the top spots.

Binissalem is a small municipality in the district of Raiguer on Majorca, and is in the centre of the island’s wine region of Binissalem DOP.

Overall, this Mediterranean island is one of my favourite places in the world and it would still be even if it didn’t have a single grain of sand or sun lounger on it.
