When in Rome: The Must-Visit Gems of the Eternal City
Take Your Time with What to See in Rome
From ancient ruins to Renaissance art, Rome beckons travelers with its timeless allure and rich history. As the heart of Italy, the Eternal City boasts an enchanting blend of iconic landmarks, charming piazzas, and delectable cuisine. In this travel blog, we will take you on a captivating journey through Rome’s top places to visit, ensuring you experience the very essence of this mesmerizing city.
Go for a Stroll:
First things first: I like to start my time in any new city with a walk where I don’t really know where I am going. This is when I started to get a bit worried in the Italian capital, as I began to see the size of the place and how exciting it all looked. For a start, I realised that the large wall that ran for a long distance alongside me was probably the wall of the Vatican City.
That in turn meant that the huge queue of people waiting there while I ate my hotdog were probably waiting to see the astonishing Sistine Chapel.
It would take all day for me to get in there and I still had to see St Peters, the Colosseum, the Spanish Steps, the Pantheon, Trevi Fountain and the Roman Forum.
It is easy to get overwhelmed by the number of incredible sights here. However, by walking about you will start to get a feel for the city and also realise that in Rome places to visit are all quite close together.
1. The Colosseum: Witness Ancient Grandeur
Step back in time at the Colosseum, an awe-inspiring amphitheater that once hosted gladiatorial contests and grand spectacles. As the largest amphitheater ever built, its grandeur is truly impressive. Explore the history within its walls and imagine the roars of the ancient crowds, making this iconic site a must-visit in Rome.
2. The Vatican City: Artistic Marvels and Spiritual Serenity
Cross into the world’s smallest independent state, the Vatican City, to encounter the epicenter of Roman Catholicism. Explore St. Peter’s Basilica, the world’s largest church, adorned with masterpieces by Michelangelo and Bernini. Don’t miss the Vatican Museums, home to the awe-inspiring Sistine Chapel, a treasure trove of Renaissance art.
3. The Roman Forum: Relive Ancient Politics
Walk amidst the ruins of the Roman Forum, where ancient Romans gathered for political, religious, and social activities. Wander through the arches, columns, and temples that once stood as symbols of Roman power and influence, immersing yourself in the city’s fascinating history.
4. The Pantheon: A Marvel of Architecture
Marvel at the architectural brilliance of the Pantheon, a well-preserved Roman temple turned Christian church. Its iconic dome with an oculus allows a beam of light to enter, creating a heavenly ambiance inside. The Pantheon’s history and engineering make it a captivating site to explore.
5. The Trevi Fountain: Make a Wish
Indulge in a bit of romance and tradition at the Trevi Fountain, where legend says that throwing a coin into the water ensures a return to Rome. This Baroque masterpiece, depicting Neptune’s chariot, is not only a place to make a wish but also a breathtaking sight to behold.
6. Piazza Navona: An Artist’s Paradise
Visit the vibrant Piazza Navona, known for its ornate fountains and street artists. Admire Bernini’s famous Fountain of the Four Rivers and soak in the lively atmosphere as painters and performers add an artistic touch to this enchanting square.
7. The Spanish Steps: Scenic Serenity
Climb the Spanish Steps, an iconic staircase connecting the Piazza di Spagna and Trinità dei Monti Church. Relax on the steps, offering a picturesque view of the bustling city below, or explore the designer boutiques and charming cafes surrounding the area.
8. Villa Borghese Gardens: Nature’s Retreat
Escape the urban bustle at Villa Borghese, Rome’s largest public park. Stroll through lush gardens, rent a rowboat on the tranquil lake, and admire classical art in the Galleria Borghese. This verdant oasis provides a delightful respite from city sightseeing.
As we have already seen, in Rome places to visit are so numerous and there is so much to see, it might seem strange that the next point I want to make is to just take your time. If you are going to go somewhere as special at the Italian capital you need to slow down and appreciate everything, from the art and the beauty to the astonishing history of this city. A good example comes with the incredible St Peters Basilica.
If you just take a few selfies outside and then dash around inside it you will only get a very brief and superficial idea of the majesty of this place. I ate some food in the massive plaza outside, while listening to some Italian kids shouting “mangiare” at the pigeons. I then slowly wandered around the inside. It is a weird feeling to be surrounded by so much history and so many pieces of famous art. A top tip here is to climb into an elevator that takes you up to the top of the cupula. When you are way up here you can truly appreciate the magnificence and the size of the place.
Equally, the Spanish Steps and Trevi Fountain are places to sit down, soak up the unique atmosphere and feel as though you are part of, probably the most famous and richly historic city ever built by mankind.
The feeling of being here and enjoying Rome and all it’s history is something that you have to experience rather than have it explained to you.
While walking about is a terrific plan for your first few hours here, there are too many things to do in Rome for this to make sense all the time. The good news is that there is an underground train system in Rome and it is easy to use. There are only 2 lines on it, called A and B helpfully enough.
Apparently the amount of lines is limited here by the sheer volume of wonderful old buildings scattered about the city that they can’t touch. I spent my last couple of days here using the Metro to get around, using a map and an itinerary to not get lost. If you are short on time then this will help you see the best of this city, while eating and drinking causally from street vendors also turns out to be a good idea to save time and enjoy a more authentic trip too.
Of course, a better idea is to try and stay at least a week or two in order to enjoy this fascinating place in a more relaxed way.
